Dr. Arun Gowdamarajan delivered a speech to the American Cancer Society on Advances in Colon Cancer Screening and treatment. He also was honored with an award for "Mission Delivery, Volunteer of the Year".

State of the art procedures conducted by surgeons at the Colon & Rectal Care Center were featured on local news programs. These surgical procedures are believed to be the first conducted in Indiana!

Dr. Shekar Narayanan of the Colon and Rectal Care Center has successfully performed the first Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection (STARR), in Indiana, for obstructive defecations. Performed at Community Hospital North, this minimally invasive surgical technique, offered to women, is designed to restore a patients rectal anatomy and thus be able to better expel stool. Though not all patients are candidates, those that qualify may have up to an 80% improvement in quality of life.

July 2006

Dr. Shekar Narayanan performed the first successful Robotically Assisted colon operation in Indiana on June 26, 2006 at Community Hospital North. The surgery was performed using four small incisions and the patient was released to home on the third post-operative day.

Dr Muller becomes a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr Muller performed what is believed to be the first TEM (transanal endoscopic microsurgery) in Indiana at Community Hospital North. TEM is a minimally invasive colorectal surgery that does not involve any incisions on the outside of the body. The purpose is to remove early cancers and pre-cancerous growths located deep inside the rectum or lower colon.

Dr Jager was named a finalist for the Indianapolis Monthly Health Care Heroes Award for physicians.

Dr Gowdamarajan and Dr Muller provided several presentations on the “Diagnosis and Treatment of Anorectal Problems for nurse practitioners at the annual Indiana Nurse Practitioner Meeting.

The Colon and Rectal Care Center, Dr Jager, Dr Narayanan, Dr Muller and Dr Gowdamarajan, hosted a seminar for primary care physicians on the latest advances in minimally invasive surgery on March 23, 2005.

The Colon and Rectal Care Center, Dr Jager, Dr Narayanan, Dr Muller and Dr Gowdamarajan, will host the third annual seminar entitled “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Colorectal Problems For Primary Care” on February 12, 2005 at the Marriott East Convention Center, Indianapolis.

Dr. Joseph Muller, of the Colon and Rectal Care Center, presented current concepts on “The Management of Hemorrhoids and Rectal Cancer” to the Riverview Hospital Medical Staff on September 7.

Dr Arun Gowdamarajan, of the Colon and Rectal Care Center, provided presentations to the Community Hospital East Tumor Board entitled “Carcinoid Tumor of the Distal Rectum” on September 7 and “Stromal Tumor of the Rectovagional Septum” on September 21.
 

September 2004

Colon and Rectal Care Center, Dr. Jager and Dr. Narayanan, are pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Muller and Dr. Arun Gowdamarajan joined the practice on Sept 1. Dr. Muller completed his fellowship in colorectal surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center, and Dr. Gowdamarajan completed his fellowship in colorectal surgery at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.


August 2004

Dr. Shekar Narayanan of Colon and Rectal Care Center, has implanted the first series of artificial anal sphincters in Central Indiana. The artificial anal sphincter restores anal continence in those afflicted with fecal incontinence, when more conventional means fail, and avoids a colostomy.
